Some food for thought on this week’s opponent.
Numbers don’t always tell the complete story, but they usually get in the ballpark. Perusing some NCAA rankings a few minutes ago I noticed this.
In the major categories for offense and defense – Rushing offense, passing offense, scoring offense, total offense, rushing defense, pass defense efficiency, scoring defense, total defense – Ole Miss ranks in the top 50 of 120 FBS teams one time.
The Rebels’ pass defense efficiency rating of 122.21 ranks 44th in the nation, 10th in the SEC.
In those same categories this week’s opponent, Alabama, ranks outside the top 50 just once. The Crimson Tide is ranked No. 73 in passing offense.
Six times the Tide ranks inside the top 25, four times – all pertaining to defense – inside the top 5. Alabama is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation in rushing defense at 39.83 yards a game, and No. 1in scoring defense at 7.0 points per game.
Ole Miss and Alabama kick off Saturday at 5 on ESPN2.
