Reason No. 21: Numbers | Ole Miss Sports

This is a random order. Here is Reason No. 21 that Ole Miss will be improved in 2011.

It would not be correct to say depth – proven quality depth – is a reason the Rebels will be improved.

But they do have numbers.

As has been discussed some on the blog today, there are numbers at wide receiver. The Rebels signed five on Signing Day and already had mid-year transfer Philander Moore in house to join a decent mix of veterans, guys who weren’t necessarily explosive last year but got some things done.

There are numbers at the position.

There are numbers at cornerback too. There were very few in the spring, but now senior Marcus Temple is back, and freshman Senquez Golson has settled in with baseball in the rear view mirror.

Safety is the same as corner. Cody Prewitt and Denzel Nkemdiche give the Rebels numbers.

Numbers in and of themselves are not encouraging, but Houston Nutt believes he’s signed quality players, and the new guys have indeed shown up in camp.

That doesn’t mean all will have a role this season. Redshirt decisions are still being made, and those decisions made in August could change with injury or other factors.
While numbers don’t necessarily mean a player is game-ready, they do give coaches options, and you can never have enough of those. If one player is not getting the job done, there are other places to turn. The numbers create a constant mindset of competition. It’s not just in August.

Presently, the numbers at wide receiver are more game ready than the numbers in the secondary. There are exciting players in the freshman class, and David Lee and Nutt are looking for different ways to get them the ball.
