Saturday Scrimmage Notebook | Ole Miss Sports

Notes and observations from the second major scrimmage of Ole Miss camp. …

DE Jason Jones, safety Damien Jackson and WR Melvin Harris were among players held out with an injury.

Junior college transfer defensive tackle Gilbert Pena played with heavy tape on his right hand, which was fractured last week.

There was no change in the quarterback race, and there appears to be no hurry from Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt to name a starter.

Tonight’s numbers: Randall Mackey 4-for-9, 69 yards, INT, TD; Barry Brunetti 4-for-8, 73 yards, TD; Zack Stoudt 7-for-15, 91 yards.

Brunetti and Stoudt loked to be the more consistent passers. Mackey hit a big touchdown pass, a 53-yard completion to freshman Donte Moncrief, late in the scrimmage.

Nutt and offensive coordinator David Lee indicated there’s more evaluation to take place and that there’s no rush to make a decision.

Freshman Senquez Golson, in his second work since turning down the Red Sox, showed up early with a nice hit on WR Tobias Singleton and also had a pair of pass break-ups.
Clearly the run game is what this offense will be about. There is emphasis on getting the wide receivers involved on the ground. Newcomers Moncrief and Philander Moore both had touchdown runs, Moncrief of 35 yards, Moore of 24.

Speaking of the run game, center A.J. Hawkins was pulled in the latter stages of the scrimmage. Nutt said he wanted to get some playing time for his backup. Hawkins was named to the Rimington watch list in the summer. Stay tuned.

Looks like the run game could include a resurgence of the Wild Rebels. Two touchdowns were scored from the formation, one being Moncrief’s run, the other when Brandon Bolden took the snap and ran 3 yards to the end zone. Bolden took all the Wild Rebel snaps this evening.

I do believe tight end Jamal Mosely will be more involved in the passing game than tight ends have been in recent seasons, but Mosely hasn’t been targeted much in the two scrimmages. Officially, he had no catches, but did have a nifty 19-yard gain with a Brunetti pass over the middle wiped out by penalty.
