FINAL: LSU 11, Ole Miss 2
The absence of RJ Hively really showed up in pitching depth. Hively wouldn’t have thrown a complete game, most likely, but the chances for him to go five or six strong innings were pretty good.
As it was, Tanner Bailey started and was OK. He was making his second appearance of the tournament, having thrown two innings against Kentucky two days ago. The best thing to say about Bailey is he left the game with a managable deficit, giving up three runs in three innings. The Rebels trailed 3-1 at that time.
Chris Ellis and Aaron Greenwood kept things close for a time. Greenwood was ultimately charged with three runs over two innings but made some nice pitches to get out of the sixth and threw a scoreless seventh. It was 5-2 in the eighth when the wheels fell off, and Dylan Chavez was driving at the time. Chavez allowed inherited runs to score, plus his own. He gave up four hits without recording an out, and when he left the game it was 9-2.
Given the state of offense at Ole Miss recently plus the fact that the Rebels were facing a potential No. 1 draft pick in LSU’s Kevin Gausman, it’s not likely they would have rallied from 5-2 with six outs left, but the eighth inning removed all doubt.
Behind Chavez, Hawtin Buchanan gave up a hit and a run in 1.1 innings, and Josh Laxer gave up a hit and a run in .1 to close things out.
Offensviely, the Rebels had eight hits. Alex Yarbrough, who was hitless in the Gausman game in Oxford when he went 0-for-6 and twice failed to drive in the winning run with extra-inning chances, was 2-for-4, both hits against Gausman, who pitched seven innings with two runs, seven hits, a walk and seven strikeouts.
Auston Bousfield has a big game, going 3-for-4 with two doubles.
It will be Tanner Bailey starting for Ole Miss in about 50 minutes, not R.J. Hively, and freshman Jake Overbey starting at short.
Complete lineups when we get them.
