Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt from his Sunday teleconference …
Right guard Rishaw Johnson will also sit out the Arkansas game as a result of his suspension for unspecified team rules violations that occurred in the summer. Nutt said Johnson had a good summer and “turned his life around” and that he did not want to stop that momentum by making Johnson sit games early in the season.
Senior Brandon Green started for Johnson against UAB and will start again this week. Nutt said Green graded well with three knock downs and three finishes.
Nutt said he expects the Arkansas game to stir the same emotions in him that it did last year when he was facing the Razorbacks – the team he coached for 10 years – for the same time. This will be Arkansas’ first trip to Oxford with Nutt as coach of Ole Miss.
Nutt said his staff recruited Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett but that Mallet chose to go to Michigan when Arkansas signed Mitch Mustain of Springdale, Ark. “We knew at the end from the calls we got from him that he was probably going to leave Michigan and come back home,” said Nutt, who added that Mallett is throwing the ball as well as anyone in the nation right now, better than Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) and Colt McCoy (Texas).
Nutt said Mallett attended his football camps at Arkansas beginning in the sixth grade.
Injured cornerback Marshay Green will practice today but will not have contact. The Rebels will take Monday off, and Green will be reevaluated Tuesday to see if he can go through contact. He sustained a cracked rib and a lacerated kidney last week against Alabama.
