The Ole Miss-Memphis renewal | Ole Miss Sports

Ole Miss and Memphis will renew their football series, Ole Miss has announced. It’s a shame that the decision comes at the expense of the Clemson games in 2015 and 2016.

The release states that the school’s have agreed in principle to also renew the basketball series as soon as scheduling permits.

The football series begins in 2014. That’s ample time for basektball scheduling to work out, and Ole Miss should see that it does.

Ole Miss doesn’t need Memphis in football. The Rebels can find a home-and-home series elsewhere if that’s the goal. Geographically, there is a convenience factor in playing Memphis, but that’s not so important as to renew the football series without Memphis providing something of value. The basketball game is where Memphis can do that.

The strategy of scheduling at least one BCS-level non-conference opponent is good and needs to be part of the plan moving forward.

You have to take into consideration the health of your own program relative to wins and losses. There’s a time for everything, but you ought to be able to schedule ACC opponents. It’s not like picking on Oklahoma. Texas is on the schedule this year, but that deal was struck during better times for Ole Miss football.
