Thursday morning update | Ole Miss Sports

Getting ready to leave what they call the lovliest village on the plains this morning.

Actually, I stayed at a lovely new retaild development, and, if my wife and daughter had been here, they’d have loved the lovely view of Target.

On the NCAA tournament front, if the Rebels are going to get in, and I think it’s a stretch, State’s loss to Auburn can only be beneficial. For Ole Miss to work its way in, the Rebels have to win out. They may even have to get to Sunday of the SEC tournament, but they will need at least one big, quality RPI win in Nashville.

I’m thinking the NCAA will decide between four and five SEC teams, not five and six. In that case, the Rebels needs teams like State and Florida, which lost Tuesday night at home to Vanderbilt, to continue to falter.

On the mascot front, the Tallahassee Democrat wonders why such passion for the issue. I wonder the same thing. …

The (Lady) Rebels open SEC tournament play at 11 a.m., against South Carolina. The Gamecocks defeated Ole Miss by 14 in Columbia in the regular season. The Rebels, at one time 5-1 in the SEC, finished 7-9 and basically would have to win the tournament to get into the NCAAs …

Baseball is traveling today and will begin a three-game set with Tulane tomorrow. The next two weekends – No. 10 Louisville visits next weekend – will be good measuring sticks for Ole Miss, which has begun the season with really productive pitching.
