The news is not good for D.T. Shackelford. MRI results revealed a torn ACL, the school confirmed in a news release a few minutes ago.
It is expected that Shackelford, a junior from Decatur, Ala., will have surgery within the next two weesk.
Typical recovery time is six to eight months. In a best case scenario, Shackelford would be available to play in mid-October.
Shackelford is the team’s best defensive player right now, but if the Rebels are in a position that they have to rush him onto the field in mid-October, then they really haven’t improved much.
The more likely scenario is that Shackelford takes a redshirt year.
Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt will address the situation more following today’s practice.
Shackelford made the All-SEC freshman team two years ago. Last year, splitting time at end and weak side linebacker, he led the team in sacks with five, pressures with three and was second in tackles for loss with nine.
