Since the news of Houston Nutt’s dismissal was announced there have been signs of the change that is to come.
One of those, the day after, was Nutt’s daughter moving some boxes out of the football building. Another came today when Tyrone Nix, with a bounce in his step, walked into the lobby, smiled real big and told us all to remain seated for the interview process. “This one’s on me,” he said.
It hasn’t been a good year for the defense, but Nix has always been professional with us.
Nix says he has not made plans beyond Saturday’s season finale at Mississippi State.
“I want to spend some time with my family. I have to reevaluate some things that I want to get right in my life to be a better football coach, be a better dad, be a better person.”
Nutt also hasn’t made plans, he said, in spite of internet chatter on a website devoted to coverage of the University of Memphis that had him set to become the Tigers’ next coach. Larry Porter remains the coach at Memphis. No change has been announced.
“I’ve had no contact whatsoever. They’ve got a head coach. It’s strictly a rumor. I have not talked to anyone there with Memphis, and that’s really unfair to coach Porter. He’s the coach there, and everybody needs to respect that and let me finish this game here.”
While Nutt has said he wants to coach again, and he also is in no hurry to lock up the next job.
“I want a little time to disconnect after this game. Let’s just see what’s out there, who’s interested and go from there. I’m not in any hurry at all.”
Nutt said his players have had a good attitude and have practiced well this week.
“A lot of the guys have had a little extra bounce this week and are practicing hard,” he said.
