Wednesday Practice Report | Ole Miss Sports

By Hayden Sowers

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt came off the field happy today with his team’s preparation for Vanderbilt on Saturday saying, “Our guys concentrated very well both offensively and defensively and on special teams.”

Nutt also mentioned the need to play 60 minutes and be ready to go early in the morning, citing the 11:21 kickoff time.

According to Nutt, recovering DE Jason Jones will make the trip, and “We’ll try to get a couple of plays out of him.”

Senior running backs Brandon Bolden and Enrique Davis are still day to day, and their statuses are still unknown for the game.

With Mike Marry being unable to practice again today look for Ralph Williams, Joel Kight, Keith Lewis, and Sederius Bryant to get the majority of the plays at linebacker on Saturday. Lewis and Bryant will be making their SEC debuts, both being true freshman.

Defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix said of Marry going down, “It just gives another opportunity for a young man to step up.” Nix mentioned Bryant and Lewis being key factors, and seemed very confident with both of them in the game.

With Brishen Matthews battling a back injury, Nix was asked who could see some time playing Spur on Saturday, “We moved Vincent Moss there. He’s a guy who played there in the spring behind Clarence Jackson. We felt like he had a chance to help this defense at multiple positions, but he is a guy with outstanding speed and play-making ability. We Feel real comfortable with him in the game.”

Freshman wideout Nick Brassell was getting some reps at cornerback on Wednesday. Wide receivers coach Gunter Brewer talked specifically about the development of the depth at WR position being a key reason Brassell was given some reps on the defensive side of the ball.

Freshman LB turned DE C.J. Johnson was asked about the transition to DE. “It has been a little difficult getting used to putting my hand in the ground, but I did it some in high school. I’m just getting the feel of how everything is going, and it is going pretty good right now.”

Johnson admitted it was hard for him not to play in the first game and he initiated contact with Nutt about how the get on the field faster. That’s how the move to DE came about. When asked if he expected to play Saturday, CJ responded with, “Oh yeah, definitely.”
