PONTOTOC – The North Mississippi Coca-Cola Junior Golf Tour completed its second week Monday at the Pontotoc Country Club.
Cason Collins, 16, finished first in his division with a score of 79. Collins also won his division in the Tour’s first week at the Natchez Trace Golf Club and sits atop the 16-18 year olds in the Tour’s point standings.
“I played great today. I just hit the greens today, and that is really what saved me. I had trouble putting early, but I hit my greens,” Collins said.
Closer to the hole was not always a good thing. “These greens were tough today. They’re small and hard to judge,” Collins said.
He wasn’t the only one who had trouble putting on the greens. “I just had trouble making putts. I played alright, but I had trouble reading the greens,” said Blake Henley, who finished second in the 16-18’s with a score of 83.
The irons after the driver helped Henley. “I couldn’t quite hit the fairways, but my second shots were pretty good,” he said.
Mary Grace Caldwell had a strong showing and won the girls division by shooting a 94. “Today wasn’t my best day. My front nine was really bad, but I had a good back nine,” said Caldwell.
While Caldwell relies often on her long game, her short game is where she excelled Monday. “Usually it is my drivers and irons that I depend on, but my chipping was very good today,” Caldwell said.
Alyssa Trulove finished second in the girls division with a 98, and Shelbi Barnes third with a 102.
The Tour will continue into its third week next Monday at the Big Oaks Golf Club. The Tour Championship will take place at the Starkville Country Club July 30-31st and will include the top 8 players in each division in the Tour point standings.
