Corinth Warriors post up in win

CORINTH – After their matchups last season, the potential for Thursday’s Shannon-Corinth game was a tough act to follow.
Athletically, the two put on a nice show, but the Warriors’ post presence was just too much as Corinth prevailed 73-59 in a key Division 1-4A affair.
“At the beginning of the game, we actually took advantage of our post play,” Corinth head coach Keith Greene said. “And we made a real high percentage of shots.
“We knew a run was coming from Shannon. When we went back to the post, it worked in the fourth quarter as well.”
For Corinth (9-1, 5-0), Raheem Sorrell, Terrel Payton, and Kendrick Williams combined for 49 points out of their post positions. That inside strength helped to push the Warriors to as much as a 31-17 lead in the second quarter.
But back fought the Raiders (9-3, 2-1). With Lamarcus Doss hitting three baskets down the stretch, a Lakee Westbrook reverse layup with 17 seconds to play in the half pulled Shannon within 34-30.
That set up a competitive third quarter, where there were four lead changes, and Corinth only held a 47-45 lead by the end of the quarter.
But the Warriors exploded out of the break, beginning the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run. A Williams lay up in traffic with 6 minutes, 10 seconds to play pushed the Corinth advantage to 56-45.
Shannon never could dent that margin the rest of the way.
“The inside game was key, we didn’t do a good job blocking out,” Shannon head coach Cedric Brim said. “ Each division game is important, and obviously they got this one.
“We’ve got a chance at them again later at home.”
Sorrell and Payton tallied 19 points each, while Westbrook led Shannon with 20.
(G) Shannon 67, Corinth 49: The hard-playing Lady Raiders (6-2, 2-1) used a 12-0 burst that extended into the third quarter to gain an edge in this contest.
Shannon, which led 49-36 after the third quarter, was led by Alexandrea Metcalf with 21. Kadejhi Long scored 12 to pace Corinth.
