NEW ALBANY – Beau Cummings and Rodney McKay had a pitchers duel rarely seen in baseball on any level here Friday afternoon and when it was over Cummings had hurled Blue Mountain College to a 3-1 win over Tougaloo College.
Cummings, a junior right-hander from Myrtle, went the distance for the Toppers in their first win of the season. He threw only 90 pitches in 9 innings and gave up four hits and struck out eight Tougaloo batters
The Bulldogs’ McKay also went the distance and only threw 96 pitches, giving up five hits and also striking out eight.
Neither pitcher walked a batter in a game that lasted only 1 hour and 48 minutes.
BMC, now 1-3, got its first two runs in the first inning when Will Wallis doubled to drive in Trae Allison and then pinch-runner Thomas Russell scored when Zac Scott reached first on an infield error.
The Toppers got their final run when Brent Townsend was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on an infield single by Allison.
Blue Mountain and Tougaloo play a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday at BNA Park.
