Danny Porter scheduled to retire as Tupelo AD

By NEMS Daily Journal

Tupelo High School director of athletics Danny Porter announced his retirement on Tuesday. It will become effective at the end of the school year.
Porter, a THS graduate, served the Tupelo school district 33 years, working as a football coach, soccer coach and nine years as AD. His Golden Wave boys soccer teams won four state championships in 1998, ’99, 2001 and ’04.
“This is something I’ve talked about the last three years,” Porter said. “There was not one particular reason.”
During his tenure as AD, Tupelo teams won 56 state championships and the program was recognized as one of the top 10 in the nation by Sports Illustrated.
The school also won five Clarion-Ledger all-sports awards during his nine years.
“I think I’ll miss coaching more than the AD part of it,” Porter said. “I’ll miss that interaction with the kids.”
The search for his replacement will begin immediately, TPSD superintendent Gearl Loden said.
