HATTIESBURG — Austin Davis threw for 155 yards and ran for 61 yards and a touchdown to help Southern Miss beat Kansas 31-16 on Friday night.
The Golden Eagles broke the game open late in the first half, when Tim Green blocked a punt and Deron Wilson scooped up the ball for an easy 7-yard touchdown return and a 21-3 lead.
Southern Miss (2-1) has won 10 straight home games dating to 2008. The Golden Eagles have beaten three straight BCS opponents at Roberts Stadium, including Virginia in 2009 and North Carolina State in 2006.
Davis was steady throughout, completing 19 of 24 passes. Desmond Johnson ran for 89 yards and a touchdown.
Kansas (1-2) couldn’t build off its momentum after beating then-No. 15 Georgia Tech last week.
Freshman quarterback Jordan Webb completed 16 of 26 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.
