Delta State claims series over Southern Arkansas

CLEVELAND – Delta State’s 20th-ranked baseball team took 2 of 3 from No. 1 Southern Arkansas in a weekend Gulf South Conference series.
The Statesmen won 21-8 in a seven-inning “mercy rule” decision on Sunday. pounding out 18 hits. Delta State won 16-1 and lost 9-6 on Saturday.
The games were the first league losses for the visiting Muleriders.
In Sunday’s game, Oxford senior Cade Hoggard, a Mississippi State transfer, homered and finished 2 for 3 with five RBIs. He went 5 for 9 in the three-game series with six runs and nine RBIs.
Southern Arkansas 39-6, 18-2 Gulf South had already clinched the No. 1 seed in the East Division for next weeend’s GSC tournament. Delta State (34-14-1, 13-7) will enter the tourney as the No. 2 seed from the East.
