VICKSBURG (AP) – Derek Horne, who played basketball for the University of Mississippi and later served as athletics director at Florida A&M, has been named athletics director at Alcorn State University.
Horne’s new position was announced by Alcorn on Friday.
Horne, a native of Quitman, Georgia, was a four-year letterman on the Mississippi basketball team from 1983 to 1986. He later worked for 15 years in his alma mater’s athletics administration department before heading to Florida A&M.
Horne will report to Alcorn State later this month and will oversee its 17 athletic programs.
“I am grateful to the search committee and President Rankins for entrusting me with this great honor,” Horne said in a news release. “I will give you my best and expect the same in return. Our focus will be working together to do what is best for Alcorn.”
Search committee member Dr. John Walls Jr. of Vicksburg said he is excited about the future of Alcorn’s athletics program under Horne.
“His reputation as a leader and motivator coupled with his strategic planning and fundraising abilities made him stand out,” Walls said in the Alcorn news release.
At a Friday news conference in Vicksburg, Horne talked about his plans.
“We’re going to win championships. Not one, but championships,” he said. “I think when you build a sense of community and your student athletes feel focused and competitive, championships will come. And that’s what we’re going to do.”
