WEST POINT – Jacob Dixon has won three events on the North Mississippi Coca-Cola Junior Golf Tour this summer, including Tuesday’s final regular-season stop at Old Waverly.
Dixon, a member of Baldwyn High School’s four-time state championship team, shot a 7-over-par 79 to win the boys age 16-17 division.
“I hit everything well today,” he said. “I putted well, too.”
Dixon opened his round on the back nine at Old Waverly, where he recorded a 7-over 44. He finished up with a 1-under 35 on the course’s front side.
Dixon heads into the 36-hole Coca-Cola Tour Championship, scheduled for July 30-31 at the Ole Miss Golf Course in Oxford, as one of the favorites in his age division. He won the Ole Miss stop June 24.
“It’s a tough course to walk because of the hills,” Dixon said, referring to the Ole Miss layout. “The course sets up well for me. I can play my (right-to-left) draw without hitting any trees.
“I think I can go low there if I strike the ball well.”
Dixon’s other Tour victory came June 10 at Big Oaks.
Atkins wins at home
West Point native Hunter Atkins, who was playing in his only Tour event, shot a 6-over 78 to win the age 14-15 division on his home course.
“I wanted to play because it was on my home course,” he said. “I play this course about every day.”
Atkins, who competes mostly in Mississippi Golf Association youth tournaments, says this was his first victory this summer. His best finish prior to Tuesday was a top five ranking in Meridian.
Grenada’s Hunter Logan won the age 12-13 division with a 10-over 82. Saltillo’s Austin Lauderdale was second with an 83.
Kyle Meeks won the boys age 10-11 division, Kawson Polizzi the Powerade division and Cameron Jones the girls division.
The top eight points leaders in each age division qualify for play in the Tour Championship.
