Tupelo Christian’s Game 1 rally at Greenville St. Joe came up short Thursday night.
The Eagles lost 14-8 to open the best-of-three MHSAA Class 1A North finals series.
Tupelo Christian (23-8) entered the top of the fifth down 11-1.
“We dug a big hole, obviously, but the guys fought back,” TCPS coach Will Lowrey said. “For a loss, we did do some good things as far as the big picture of a three-game series.”
TCPS’ comeback started with JG Lipscomb’s single to score Zachary Tybor. Lipscomb later scored on a single by Lee McBunch. But St. Joe got back-to-back strikeouts with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning.
St. Joe (19-4) added a run in the fifth to make it 12-4. TCPS got RBI singles from McBunch and Tayler Beard and a two-run single from Drew Carter to cut the lead to 12-8 in the sixth. TCPS left the bases loaded in the seventh inning.
Game 2 is set for 4 p.m. today at TCPS. Carter, an Itawamba CC signee, is scheduled to start.
“We accomplished some things that would give us a good shot in the second and third game,” Lowrey said.
