Eagles soar past 'Cats in Game 1

West Union High School soared past Calhoun City 17-3 in Game 1 of a MHSAA Class 1A quarterfinals series at West Union High School.
Will Basil (6-4) improved to 3-0 on the season as the Eagles’ bats pounded out 15 hits, including three homers. Wesley Jumper, Caleb English and Hunter McQuary all went deep for West Union (15-11).
“Will was solid even though he didn’t have his best stuff,” said West Union head coach Ashley Russell. “The other guys kind of bailed him out by putting so many runs on the board.”
Class 1A
– Myrtle 6, Ingomar 2: Justin Hood held the Falcons to three hits, and Beau Cummings led the Hawks’ offense with four hits.
Class 2A
– Belmont 10, Ackerman 7: Blake Cass (7-2) survived a sixth-inning grand slam by Shawn Stricklin, and Cody Parham and Derek Whitfield both homered for the Cardinals (19-8).
Class 4A
– New Hope 8, Saltillo 3: Dillon Payne (7-3) suffered the loss for the Tigers, as the series shifts to Saltillo tonight at 6.
– West Lauderdale 6, Itawamba AHS 4: Home runs by Dillon Mitchell and Maikhail Miller were not enough as the Indians lost Game 1 on the road.
