PEARL — Seth Maness threw a three-hit complete game to lead East Carolina to a 4-0 victory over Southern Miss on Friday in the Conference USA tournament.

Maness was nearly flawless, needing 113 pitches to navigate through the Golden Eagles lineup while striking out nine and walking only one. The senior tied the school’s career strikeout record with 330 on the way to his second shutout and fourth complete game of the season.

The Pirates’ offense was led by leadoff hitter Philip Clark, who was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

Southern Miss starter Josh Thomason took the loss, giving up three earned runs in seven innings.

Neither team qualified for Saturday’s championship game, which will be decided by Rice and Houston. East Carolina finished with a 2-1 record in the tournament’s round robin format while Southern Miss was 1-2.
