East Carolina holds off late Southern Miss rally

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina built held off a late Southern Miss rally after building a big lead for a 7-6 Conference USA victory over the Golden Eagles on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (32-11, 11-4 C-USA) had previously clinched league series after winning 3-1 and 5-0 in the weekend’s first two games.
Isaac Rodriguez led Southern Miss with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in three runs.
The host Pirates (28-16, 9-9) were handcuffed in the final four innings by five Golden Eagles relievers, who gave up five hits and no runs.
Down 7-0 heading into the eighth, Southern Miss scored three runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth.
The Golden Eagles, who have won 5 of their last 7 games, return to action Wednesday night at South Alabama.
