ELLISTOWN – East Union’s Cody Bo Dillard did it all on Monday night as his team reached the Class 2A North state finals.
The senior lefty picked up his second win of the series and hit a fourth-inning grand slam for good measure in a decisive 11-1 Game 3 win over Hatley.
“He wants the ball,” East Union coach Chris Basil said. “He’s every parents’ dream. I’ve got so many kids on this team like that who love a challenge and are ready to do what it takes to be successful.”
East Union (19-13) got on the board in the first with an RBI double from Dustin Pratt and a sacrifice fly from Dillard, one of his five RBIs. Tray Davis added a two-run single in the third.
Hatley (21-10) got on the board in the fourth after Josh Carlisle hit a one-out single and scored on an error, but the Urchins blew it open in the bottom half of the inning.
Hatley starter Russ Johnson loaded the bases on two walks and an error and was chased by an RBI single from Trey Barkley.
Dillard sent the third pitch from Carlisle, who took over on the mound, over the right field wall for the grand slam, his second homer of the season.
The Urchins wrapped it up with two runs in the fifth off a potential double play ball that went into the Hatley dugout.
“Every chance East Union had to get a big hit or make a big play, they did it,” Hatley coach John Harris said. “They’re an extremely good team, well-coached, have a lot of heart and they want it. Someone’s really going to have to deal with them, that’s for sure.”
East Union plays the winner of Baldwyn and Calhoun City, who play a Game 3 tonight, in the North finals.
