EUPORA – East Webster senior pitcher Swayze Hollenhead put together an impressive performance Thursday night in a 6-4 Game 1 victory over Mantachie to open the Class 2A North semifinals.
Hollenhead broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the third when she singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bailey Williams and tacked on the final run of the three-run fourth to give the Lady Wolverines (17-7) a 4-1 lead.
Mantachie (15-7) rallied in the top of the fifth to tie the contest at 4-4 when Regan McFerrin drove in Mallory Clouse on a single, Maggie Oswalt doubled and scored on single by Allisa Patterson, and Alli DeVaughn pushed across McFerrin on a groundout.
East Webster answered with a pair run in the bottom half of the inning when Katie Gordon knocked Mantachie starting pitcher Taylor Barber out of the circle with an one-out RBI triple and later scored on a single by Autumn Frost.
Mantachie scored its first run of the game after back-to-back errors allowed DeVaughn to score in the top of the fourth. Oswalt’s double led the Lady Mustangs’ five-performance, three of those hits coming in the three-run fifth inning.
Hollenhead went three-for-three with a walk and scored two runs while striking six in the complete game victory. Williams drove in three runs, highlighted by a two-out two-run double in the fourth, as the Lady Wolverines connected 10 hits on the night.
