Eighteen area teams still in the title hunt

Football stockThere are 18 Journal area teams as the MHSAA football playoffs continue tonight.

Classes 1A, 5A and 6A open the postseason, while 2A, 3A and 4A begin second-round play.

There are three Tippah County schools in the hunt. Ripley goes to Noxubee in Class 4A. Falkner goes to Broad Street in 1A and Walnut hosts Calhoun City in 2A. It is the first time since 2009 all three teams are in the playoffs in the same year.

There are two more 1A teams still in, Monroe rivals Smithville hosting Shaw and Hamilton at Mound Bayou.

All four 2A quarterfinals games feature area teams, including Mantachie at West Bolivar and Eupora at East Union – at Northeast’s Tigers Stadium. Mantachie is trying to win 11 games for the first time.

Aberdeen goes to Charleston and North Pontotoc to Kemper County in Class 3A. Lafayette host Greenwood in 4A. In 6A, Tupelo and Starkville are both home to face Pearl and Warren Central.
