First week of High School football will feature tough tests

By Brandon Speck/NEMS Daily Journal

The 2012 high school football season begins Friday for many teams in the area and some of the Journal’s top-ranked teams face tough tests.
The top two ranked teams in Class 6A-5A, Starkville and West Point begin with matchups that could shake up the rankings. Starkville will host Noxubee County, while West Point takes a Saturday stage at the state’s top-ranked team, South Panola.
The top-ranked 4A/3A school Lafayette has won 32 straight and hosts third-ranked 6A/5A Tupelo. No. 2 ranked 4A/3A school Aberdeen begins a tough slate of six non-conference games at Columbus.
The top two teams in 2A/1A are on the road Friday, top-ranked Bruce at Kennedy and No. 2 Baldwyn at Kossuth. No. 5 Vardaman travels to Bruce in two weeks.
The Corinth Warriors get one more week of preparation before a game week.
Corinth, as well as Belmont, will be off until Aug. 24. Corinth will host Kossuth. Belmont will be at Mantachie.
New Warriors coach Doug Jones got a live look at his team in a 6-0 loss to Hernando on Saturday at the Oxford Jamboree.
The first-time head coach took away some team lessons, as well as some personal lessons.
“I thought our guys did a real good job. I’ve got some things I need to work on to make them better,” said Jones.
An early trend continued with another two quarters without a turnover. Through six quarters – including four in the spring game – Corinth has held on to every possession.
“That will always give you a chance if you don’t turn the football over,” Jones said. “The main thing we’ve got to do is get better and I’ve got to do a better job of coaching.”
The Daily Journal’s first Game of the Week this season is Friday in New Albany. Coach Ron Price and the Bulldogs face an emotional night in the team’s first game since the December death of Price’s wife, Amanda.
Coming off a 9-4 season and second round playoff appearance, New Albany hosts Ripley and new coach Chad Cook.
