Florida pitcher Johnson struck in head by ball

HOOVER, Ala. — University of Florida pitcher Brian Johnson sustained a concussion after getting struck in the back of the head by a ball.

Johnson lay on the ground for several minutes Saturday before being carted off on a stretcher. A Florida spokesman says he sustained a mild concussion but tests at a local hospital showed no fractures, bruises or bleeding. The spokesman says Johnson was released and went to the team hotel.

Johnson crouched low on the mound after a wild pitch while catcher Mike Zunino attempted to throw out a runner at second base in the first inning of a Southeastern Conference tournament semifinal game against Georgia.

Johnson immediately covered his head with both hands as he collapsed to the ground after getting hit. Teammates knelt around the mound.
