JACKSON — Southern Miss senior Gary Flowers won the Howell Trophy while Delta State’s Veronica Walker won the Gillom Trophy on Monday afternoon at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
The two awards, which are sponsored by Cellular South, are given to the state’s top men’s and women’s college basketball player, respectively.
Flowers, a 6-foot-8 forward from Dallas, is averaging 19 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for the Golden Eagles, who finished the regular season with a 21-9 record and 9-7 mark in Conference USA.
Walker, a 6-foot-1 forward from Indianola, Miss., is averaging 18.4 points and 9.8 rebounds for the Statesmen, leading the team in both categories. Delta State (26-3) has been one of the nation’s top Division II teams all season.
