Football: Defense wins day at Ole Miss practice

By From school reports

OXFORD – One of head coach Hugh Freeze’s mottos for the Ole Miss football program is to “Win the Day,” and the Rebel defense took that to heart during a two-hour workout at the indoor practice facility on Monday morning.
“The defense dominated the team period at the end,” Freeze told reporters after practice, the team’s fifth of the spring.
“The offense didn’t bring much enthusiasm to that at all. We have to get that corrected. We’re not at a place in this program to waste a period, much less a day. I felt like we probably went through the motions too much today. We’ll get that fixed.”
Among the players that stood out to Freeze during Monday’s practice in full pads were sophomore DB Chief Brown, junior LB Serderius Bryant and sophomore DE Channing Ward (Aberdeen).
Freeze also talked about a couple of defensive linemen who did not play for the Rebels a year ago – junior college transfer DT Lavon Hooks and junior DE Carlos Thompson, who redshirted last year.
Let’s get physical
“Physically, he’s got the gifts,” Freeze said of Hooks, from Northeast Mississippi. “He’s in the right league. He’s just still feeling his way through some things. He’ll be fine.”
Of Thompson, Freeze said, “that redshirt year really helped him. His body developed. He’s a lot more physical. He’s maturing some. We still need him to mature some more, particularly, off the field.”
The Rebels’ sixth spring practice is scheduled for Wednesday at 8 a.m. All spring practices are open to the public.
