Football Recruiting: Bulldogs’ recruiting still fluid

By Brad Locke/NEMS Daily Journal

There has been a bit of movement and no small amount of uncertainty with Mississippi State’s 2013 commitment class this past week.
Since Sunday, three players have withdrawn their commitments to MSU, including receiver Scott Austin, who on Thursday committed to Louisiana-Lafayette. But the Bulldogs also picked up a pair of recent commits in cornerback Tolando Cleveland and quarterback Damian Williams.
And then there’s Chris Jones, the five-star MSU commit from Houston who’s become a very hot commodity this past month. He remains a State commit, but Ole Miss has come into the picture, and the defensive end said he’ll announce his decision on national signing day.
The last few weeks have been hectic for Jones, who committed to MSU in June and flew under the radar of other schools for months.
“It’s been crazy. I’m still committed to Mississippi State,” Jones said.
MSU is hoping to close out on a handful of key prospects, including cornerback MacKensie Alexander and his twin brother, defensive back Mackenroe. Other targets include junior college defensive tackle Toby Johnson, athlete Jahmere Irvin-Sills and juco receiver Fred Ross.
Myles at home
Gabe Myles has watched this craziness swirling about MSU, but things have been quiet for him. The Starkville High School product has been committed to MSU since June, and that was little more than a formality.
Myles has been a State fan since childhood, and he already feels at home with the program.
“I use the word, but I don’t use the word loosely, it’s family,” he said. “It really feels like I’m actual family, because since I can remember I’ve been a Bulldog.”
Myles quarterbacked Starkville to the Class 5A state title last season, and he played defense, too. He’s projected to play cornerback for MSU, and he’s fine with giving up the QB position.
“I believe it’s not too much of an adjustment mentally, more of a physical adjustment, getting used to the speed of the receivers and speed of the game,” he said.
Right now, Myles is one of two MSU commits listed as a cornerback. He has a three-star rating from
