Former Tupelo standouts lead Samford to win

BIRMINGHAM – Two freshmen from Tupelo played big roles Saturday as Samford beat Marshall 9-5 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Lex Rutledge pitched four innings of hitless relief in his college debut and rightfielder Gardney Richey went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.
Rutledge came into the game with the game tied at 5. He faced 10 batters, striking out six and walking three.
Richey hit a two-run homer in the Bulldogs’ five-run third inning.
Samford lost the second game, 5-4.
