New Albany native Eli Whiteside is back in the major leagues after a callup by the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
Whiteside will be the Giants’ backup catcher after Hector Sanchez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left knee.
The 33-year-old Whiteside has been at Triple-A Fresno this season, where he was hitting .241 in 47 games with one home run.
Last season, with All-Star Buster Posey sidelined by injury, Whiteside appeared in 82 games last season and hit .197.
He has a .218 career batting average in four seasons with Baltimore and San Francisco.
Sanchez, injured Tuesday night in a 9-0 win against Atlanta, was hitting .281 with two homers and 24 RBIs.
