The easy part for New Site was winning. The hard part was figuring out where to go on Thursday.
The Lady Royals are aiming for another trip to Jackson and looked the part in a 75-29 win Monday against West Tallahatchie in a Class 2A North opener. The rest of 2A North will run through Coahoma County beginning Thursday, but not without confusion.
Coahoma was No. 1 on the girls site list, but if Coahoma’s boys win at New Site tonight, they would be No. 1 on the boys list.
Coahoma girls coach Derrick Moore, whose team beat East Union, ended the speculation. No matter what happens tonight, his girls will host.
“We played well,” New Site coach Byron Sparks said. “West Tallahatchie played well for a couple of minutes, but I think we pushed the ball and got into their legs. We wore them down pretty quickly.”
New Site got a game-high 18 from Grace Elliott and 11 from Cristin Pharr. The Lady Royals will play Eupora Thursday, two games shy of the state tournament.
Sparks feels like his team is playing well at the right time.
“The kids have been there. They know what they’re playing for,” he said. “I see a different energy and focus.”
Ripley 67, Corinth 50: No. 4-seed Corinth gave top-seed Ripley (23-5) all it wanted in a game that was tied 43-all at the half.
“We’ve been known do that,” Ripley coach Cliff Ormon said. “We kind of played to see how hard we needed to.”
Foul trouble and defensive stops helped Ripley pull ahead and 30 post points from Jada Rich didn’t hurt. Ripley will be at Itawamba for the 4A North Tournament.
“She’s very physical and knows how to use her body down there. It opens things up so much,” Ormon said.
Matavia Cox added 18 and Maia Nellum 11 for Ripley. Jamia Kirk scored 15 to lead Corinth.
Ray Brooks 56, Houlka 42: Houlka’s season came to an end. Jamesha Word scored 12 in the loss.
Kossuth 74, Charleston 60: Parrish Tice scored 22 for the Lady Aggies. Baylee Turner added 16, Ryleigh Follin 15.
Booneville 53, North Panola 29: The Lady Devils got 14 points from freshman Adallice Young and will host the 3A North Tournament.
Belmont 53, Independence 41: Elisiah Jones scored 16 points to lead Belmont. Katelyn Nunley and Natahsa Jones scored 12 each.
