JACKSON — One of the most popular golfers in the world has committed to play in next month’s Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Tournament officials Thursday told The Clarion-Ledger that Fred Couples, a former Masters champion and long-time PGA Tour veteran, will play in the Champions Tour event scheduled March 23-25 at Fallen Oak Golf Club in Saucier.
Couples, who is 52, has won six times on the tour for players at least 50 years old. He won four times in 2010 and twice last season. He’s played in only one Champions Tour event this season, finishing tied for 11th in the Mitsubishi Championship in January.
Couples has 15 PGA Tour victories, including the 1992 Masters. His career earnings are more than $22 million.
