Governors muzzle Bulldogs

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Jake Lane hit a pair of home runs Tuesday night, including the walk-off game-winner in the 11th inning, to lead Austin Peay State to a 3-2 win against Mississippi State.

The Bulldogs, the best-hitting team in the Southeastern Conference was held to seven hits, just two for extra bases. Their winning streak ended at four games.

Lane's first homer staked the host Governors (31-17) -the Ohio Valley Conference leaders -to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs (31-13) rallied on a solo home run by Edward Easley in the sixth and a pinch-hit single by Brandon Turner with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Lane, who has four homers in his last four games, won it with one out in the 11th on an 0-2 delivery from John Lalor (2-1).

For MSU, starter Tyler Whitney (seven innings) and reliever Lalor struck out 10 and walked just one.

Matt Kole pitched one-third of an inning for the victory. Starter Michael Dunn allowed just four hits in six innings of work.

Austin Peay left seven runners on base; MSU stranded six.

The teams play again today at 6 p.m. Mississippi State continues its final road trip of the regular season with a weekend SEC series at Georgia.
