Johnny Hill was glad to see school get started this week.

“It’s really better,” said Tupelo High School’s head football coach. “The kids have school and practice. They get down to more of a routine.”

The Golden Wave wraps up two weeks of practice this week, as its prepares for the season and its Aug. 28 opener against Brandon.

“We’re working on getting these gentlemen in shape,” Hill said. “That’s the key. We will continue to do that.”

Hill says his players have had only two “terrible” practices in the first two weeks.

“The rest have been good,” he said. “The kids are fighting through the heat. Practicing football is not always fun, but we’ve got to get them through all that mental stuff so they can play the game with intensity.

“It’s like chopping away at a sculpture to make something great.”

Hill praised the preseason work of tackles Donald Tucker, Dan Mahan and Jason Edwards, tight end Chuck McElroy, center Chase Jefcoat and quarterback, receiver, defensive back Kelly Shumpert.

“We’ve had a lot of kids do well; I’m leaving about a dozen out,” Hill said. “All in all, we’ve been pleased. We’ve come a long way.”

One battle shaping up is at quarterback, where Shumpert, Stan Hill and Ken Ford are in the hunt for playing time.

“We’re fortunate to have three capable players at the quarterback position,” Hill said.

Tupelo has scheduled its annual “Meet the Wave” scrimmage for Friday, Aug. 21, at the stadium. A time will be announced next week.
