Sophomore QB Wesley Ross threw two touchdown passes to lead the South Pontotoc Cougars (2-0) to their second straight win, a 30-6 decision at Vardaman.

Armon Gregory caught a 30-yard TD strike in the third quarter to give South Pontotoc a 30-0 lead. He scored the game’s final points with a 46-yard interception return.

Ross connected with Clay Hood for a 54-yard score in the second quarter. Josh Estes had a 6-yard TD run and Austin Rainwater kicked a 36-yard FG for the winners.

Quon Cummings had a 30-yard TD run for Vardaman (0-2).

OKOLONA 31, HOULKA 0: Two players – Curtis Green and J.C. Buchanan – returned fumbles for touchdowns to lead the Chieftains (1-0) to a season-opening victory for first-year coach Jack Clark.

Houlka (0-2) was playing its first game after this week’s resignation of coach Rob Allen.

Green returned his fumble 78 yard to give Okolona a 25-0 halftime lead. Buchanan scored on a 60-yard recovery and run in the third quarter.

Dequin Babbit scored on a 12-yard run and Jay Collins added an 8-yard rushing score in the first quarter for the Chieftains. Jacobie Heard also caught a 43-yard TD pass from Tyson Eddie.

MANTACHIE 34, BELMONT 28: Senior quarterback Dustin Carrel passed for 275 yards and four TDs to lead the Mustangs (2-0) to their second consecutive win.

Three of the TD strikes went to Austin Byrd, including the game-clinching score of 16 yards in the second half.

Luke Alexander threw three TD passes for Belmont, including two to Harrison Fancher.

ABERDEEN 28, NEW HOPE 25: G.G. Blanchard and Josh Williams each scored two touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs (1-1), who play next week at Amory in the annual “A Game.”

CALHOUN CITY 30, HOUSTON 13: Wildcats junior QB Chakel Gates passed for four touchdowns to lead Calhoun City (2-0).

Three of Gates’ scoring strikes covered 15, 17 and 70 yards to Levarious Varnado.

WATER VALLEY 56, COFFEEVILLE 20: E.J. Bounds rushed for three touchdowns and passed for one to lead the unbeaten Blue Devils (2-0).

CALEDONIA 41, HAMILTON 3: Exchange student Maxamilliano Gracette kicked a FG for Hamilton’s lone score in the Lions (1-1) road loss.

DELTA 26, CALHOUN ACADEMY 24: Calhoun Academy (0-2) lost in a non-division road game.

STARKVILLE ACADEMY 28, EAST RANKIN 7: The Vols (1-1) won their season home opener.

BRUCE 39, POTTS CAMP 8: Bruce (2-0) scored on the game’s opening kickoff – an 80-yard return by Darian Sullivan – and never looked back.

QB Donta Armstrong had a 15-yard TD run and threw a 32-yard TD strike to Tyler Donavan for first-quarter points.

Jay Johnson made it 26-0 with a 55-yard punt return before the quarter ended.

Armstrong added a 1-yard TD run in the second quarter. Jordan Harris had Potts Camp’s TD with a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter.
