– This week: Amory, which almost pulled off the upset of the year last week against Shannon, is still in search of its first win when it takes on Pontotoc, the Daily Journal’s fifth-ranked large school.
– Recent history: Haven’t played in last three seasons.
– Amory: The Panthers took Shannon, the Journal’s No. 1-ranked large school, to overtime before losing 13-7. … QB Forest Williams is 32 of 69 passing for 394 yards, 1 TD and 3 INTs. … RB Jore’el Freeman has 39 carries for 197 yards. … WR Josh Andress has 7 catches for 94 yards and 1 TD. … LB Channing French has 49 total tackles.
– Pontotoc: QB Canden Dallas has completed 32 of 60 passes for 480 yards and 7 TDs. … RB Randall Crayton has rushed 63 times for 514 yards and 4 TDs. … WR Ryan Thompson has 7 catches for 129 yards and 2 TDs. … Pontotoc is only allowing 8.5 points per game.

Clarksdale (1-3) at Saltillo (3-1)
– This week: A struggling Clarksdale team takes on a Saltillo team that has had a week off since losing to Booneville. This is the Division 1-5A opener for both teams.
– Recent history: Haven’t played in last three seasons.
– Clarksdale: The Wildcats’ three losses have come to West Bolivar, Christian Brothers (Tenn.) and South Panola. Their lone win was against Greenville-Weston. … QB Tavin Taylor has completed 28 of 49 passes for 368 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT against Mississippi teams this season. … The Wildcats surrendered 23 unanswered points to Christian Brothers at home.
– Saltillo: The Tigers have two shutouts on the season and are allowing 6 points per game. … QB Drew Chisholm is 16 of 45 passing for 253 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTS. He has also rushed 41 times for 208 yards and 1 TD. … LB Quad Freeman leads team in tackles (45) and has 2 sacks and a safety.

Cleveland (2-3) at Shannon (4-0)
– This week: Cleveland is coming off a 9-6 win over East Side, while Shannon escaped Amory with a 13-7 win in OT. This is a non-division Class 4A matchup.
– Recent history: Haven’t played in last three seasons.
– Cleveland: QB/FS James Brown completed 43 of 75 passes for 766 yards, 4 TDs and 5 INTs. He has rushed 42 times for 135 yards and 1 TD. He’s made 42 tackles on defense. … RB Isaac Robinson has rushed 60 times for 301 yards and 5 TDs. … WR Randy Payne has 11 receptions for 353 yards and 1 TD.
– Shannon: QB Legilbert Bogan is 23 of 52 passing for 545 yards, 7 TDs and 1 INT. … RB Keon McGaughy has 100 carries for 752 yards and 9 TDs. He has 6 receptions for 179 yards and 3 TDs. … WR Chris Davis has 8 receptions for 201 yards and 3 TDs.

Ripley (1-3) at Baldwyn (0-4)
– This week: Ripley, ranked No. 3 in the Journal’s Class 3A rankings, finally plays a smaller school after playing its first four games against Class 4A schools. Class 2A Baldwyn is 0-2 versus 3A teams (Booneville and Nettleton) and lost its two other games to Saltillo (5A) and New Albany (4A).
– Recent history: Despite not playing each other in the last four seasons, these two schools are longtime opponents. According to Ripley statistician Jim Pannell, Baldwyn holds a 23-21-1 advantage in a series that dates back to 1934. It should be noted, though, that there are no results available for the 1947 and 1948 meetings.
– Ripley: RB Devin Jones has rushed 41 times for 294 yards and 2 TDs. He also has 11 catches for 122 yards, and 3 INTs on defense. … QB Acie Vance has completed 23 of 39 passes for 269 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs. He has rushed 34 times for 136 yards and 4 TDs. He also has intercepted 2 passes on defense. … LB Chase Chapman has a team-high 32 tackles and has deflected 2 passes and forced 1 fumble.

Itawamba AHS (4-0) at Corinth (2-2)
– This week: The Daily Journal’s third-ranked large school, Itawamba AHS, looks to continue its dominance over area teams when it plays Corinth, which defeated the Indians’ Division 1-4A foe, Tishomingo County, last Friday.

– Corinth: QB Parks Frazier has completed 55 of 114 passes for 693 yards, 3 TDs and 3 INTs. … WR Diante Curlee has 24 receptions for 370 yards and 4 TDs. He has rushed 34 times for 125 yards and 1 TD. He has even returned 2 INTs for TDs, including a 103-yarder vs. Tishomingo County. … DB Deonta Herman leads the team in tackles (36).

Tupelo (0-3) at Columbus (1-3)
– This week: The Golden Wave travels south to face the Falcons in the Division 1-6A opener for both teams. Tupelo had an open date last week while Columbus lost, 34-20, to Louisville.
– Recent history: Tupelo has won three straight games in the series, including last season’s 39-12 win at home. Columbus last won in 2005 when then QB Tyson Lee, now at Mississippi State, directed the Falcons past the Wave.
– Tupelo: QB Nathan Wallace, who has completed 15 of 29 passes for 183 yards, gets the starting nod. He shares duties with Luke Hobson. … DE P.J. Jones, who has been sidelined with a hip pointer, is doubtful for tonight with an ankle injury. … RB McKenzie Tyler has rushed for 176 yards on 46 carries and has 1 TD.
– Columbus: The lineup is loaded with talented sophomore skill players, including QB Cedric Jackson, RB Damion Baker and WR Deonte Jones. … The Falcons opened their season with a 27-26 victory against Aberdeen, but have since lost three straight to Noxubee County, West Point and Louisville.

Tupelo Christian Prep (2-3) at Heidelberg Acad. (4-1)
– This week: The first-year MHSAA Eagles travel tonight to face another Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) opponent, formerly the Mississippi Private School Association (MPSA).
– Recent history: This is the first meeting between the two schools.
– TCPS: QB Will Cockrell has completed 80 of 149 passes for 862 yards and 4 TD in five games. Last week, however, he rushed for 99 yards on a wet field in a 39-15 win against Greenville Christian. … WR/RB Braxton Melancon has caught 33 passes for 450 yards and 4 TD. … LB Ron Lavigne leads the team with 42 tackles while Melancon has recorded 39.
– Heidelberg Academy: The home team is averaging 29.8 points per game. … A member of the MAIS District 8, they defeated Ben’s Ford (La.) Christian, 45-16, last week.

Walnut (4-0) at Booneville (4-0)
– This week: This has all the makings for a good game, as the Journal’s No. 1 small school, Walnut, takes on Booneville, the Journal’s top-ranked team in Class 3A. There could be one disadvantage, however, for Walnut: The Wildcats will be playing their second game in five days after beating Kossuth on Monday night, while the Blue Devils are coming off a bye week.
– Recent history: Haven’t played in last three seasons.
– Walnut: QB Hunter Doyle is 17 of 26 passing for 263 yards and 4 TDs. … RB Mark Peterson has 24 carries for 192 yards and 2 TDs. … RB Shaquille Perry has 14 carries for 138 yards and 3 TDs. He has 6 receptions for 135 yards and 2 TDs. In all, Perry has scored 9 TDs on the season, with four coming on special teams and on defense.
– Booneville: QB Jerion Jones has completed 33 of 69 pass attempts for 500 yards, 6 TDs and 7 INTs. He has also rushed 54 times for 214 yards and 2 TDs. … RB Bo Brown has 57 carries for 292 yards and 4 TDs. … WR Drew Cristo has 15 catches for 288 yards and 2 TDs.
