High school hoops: Five worth watching

Baldwyn: Defending Class 2A champions return three starters: senior Martel Brown and sophomores Duke Upshaw and Conner McKay.

Biggersville: Lost one player from 1A title team. Faces 3A contender Aberdeen twice in the first week of the season.

Calhoun City: Everybody returns for the Wildcats, including Austin Burl and Brieton Sykes.

Corinth: Warriors return a lot of depth from the Class 4A runner-up team. Missing football players for a while, including guards Antares Gwyn, Jose Contreras and Kendrick Williams.

Tupelo: Disappointing end to 2013 after a 2012 6A finals run. Wave returns leading scorer Antonio Green, as well as starters J.J. Ashby and Isaiah Traylor.


Martell Brown, Baldwyn: The senior from Atlanta had 11 points and 10 boards in the 2A championship win against Bassfield. Hustler on each end.

Antonio Green, Tupelo: Junior has as much promise as any player in Mississippi. Averaged 13.4 points per game. Was a key freshman for state 6A runners-up in 2012.

Marcus Green, North Pontotoc: A football commit to Louisiana-Monroe, Green also led the Vikings with 18 points per game as a junior.

Daniel Simmons, Biggersville: The 6-foot-1 senior guard averaged 22 points, 7 boards and 4.5 assists for the Class 1A champ. Has an offer from Middle Tennessee State.

Raheem Sorrell, Corinth: A 6-foot-4 senior forward, Sorrell averaged 13.8 points and 6.8 rebounds for the Class 4A runners-up.

Itawamba AHS: Lady Indians, under the direction of new coach Devin Hill, have forward Kim Mallory back leading the charge.

New Site: Lady Royals, who lost in the 2A state finals last season, return forwards Grace Elliott and Cristin Pharr.

Pontotoc: Lady Warriors, who lost in the 4A state finals last season, have strong lineup returning, including guard Marlee Hatcher.

Ripley: Lady Tigers new head coach Cliff Orman has some talented players returning, including 5-10 forward Jada Rich.

Tupelo: Lady Wave has four starters returning from a team that’s made the postseason the last two years.


Grace Elliott, New Site: The 6-foot junior forward averaged 16 points per game the final month of the 2012-13 season.

Kim Mallory, Itawamba AHS: The senior forward averaged 16 points, 14 rebounds per game last year.

Kayla Russell, Pontotoc: Look for the senior guard to provide more offensive punch along with her defensive play.

Alayjah Sherer, Tupelo: The talented 6-foot freshman has the skills to play all five positions for Lady Wave.

Breanna Williams, Falkner: Senior shooting guard should easily average 20-plus points per game.
