Where is Itawamba AHS 4-star football recruit Ashton Shumpert leaning when it comes to his recruitment? Check out sports writer Brandon Speck’s weekly updates on the talented running back-athlete at the Daily Journal’s NeMissPreps blog.
Speck followed Aberdeen defensive end Channing Ward last season, writing a weekly diary that focused on his recruitment.
Shumpert, rated the nation’s 26th athlete prospect by ESPN, lists Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt as his primary suitors.
Shumpert played his sophomore and junior seasons at Tupelo High before transferring back to IAHS, where he played as a freshman, last spring.

Seven state champions featured in TCPS meet
Tupelo Christian Prep kicks off Northeast Mississippi’s high school cross country season Saturday with 14-team meet on its home course in Belden.
The meet will feature seven of the 12 defending state champions from last year’s MHSAA championships at Mississippi College’s Choctaw Trails in Clinton.
The defending champions are: Tupelo boys and girls, Pontotoc boys and girls, French Camp boys, Saltillo girls and East Union girls.
Teams from Potts Camp, North Pontotoc, South Pontotoc, Ingomar, Hickory Flat, Mantachie, Northeast Lauderdale, along with host TCPS, are entered.
TCPS coach Lynn Holland is excited to showcase his program’s “character-building” course.
“We have a great course,” he said. “It’s very challenging. Some of the kids will be shocked if they go out too fast. It’s a tough course.”
The course ends on the football field in front of the home bleachers.
The junior varsity races start with the boys at 4:15 p.m. and the girls at 4:45. The distance is 1.83 miles. The varsity boys race, a 5K, is scheduled for 5:30 while the girls race, a 4K, follows at 6:30.
Parking is $5 per vehicle.
THS Volleyfest includes four 2011 state finalists
The 13th annual Tupelo Volleyfest is scheduled for Saturday, starting at 8 a.m., at the THS gym.
The 18-team field includes four state finalists from last season – Class III champion Tupelo and runner-up Ocean Springs, Class II champion Long Beach and Class I champion Lewisburg.
The other teams entered are Amory, Belmont, Caledonia, Corinth, DeSoto Central, Lafayette, Lewisburg, Madison Central, Northwest Rankin, Oxford, Pontotoc, Ripley, Southaven, Starkville, St. Joseph.
