Shumpert getting close to trimming college list
Editor’s Note:The Journal’s Brandon Speck is checking in regularly with top prospect Ashton Shumpert of IAHS.
Vanderbilt and Ole Miss are battling for bowl eligibility on Saturday. They’re also battling to get Ashton Shumpert.
The Itawamba AHS 4-star running back heard from Vanderbilt coaches Wednesday night and Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze checked in Tuesday.
Shumpert also lists offers from Georgia, Mississippi State, Purdue, Alabama, Alcorn State, Oklahoma State, Southern Miss and Memphis.
For the first time, Shumpert said Thursday he’s getting closer to narrowing his list of 10 offers to a top five.
He plans to be in Oxford for the 6 p.m. kickoff on Saturday.
So will newly Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s top recruit, who has de-committed from Clemson.

Golden Wave bowlers hosting 5-team match
Tupelo High School’s boys and girls bowling teams open their seasons at 4 p.m. today with a five-school match at Tupelo’s Rebelanes.
The defending MHSAA Class II state champion Golden Wave and Lady Wave will bowl against teams from Tupelo Christian Prep, East Union, Nettleton and Kossuth.
Coach Susan Dudley believes her teams can defend their state titles, but not without a challenge.
“We will be OK on the girls side; we didn’t lose a lot,” she said. “Our guys will have to fight for it. We have some new bowlers.”
Ashleigh Burns, Addison Gable, Ellye Gafford, Savannah Graham, Taylor Russell, Molly Smith and Madison Stafford return for the Lady Wave.
Cody Chambers, Jake Houston, Eli McCaleb, Marcus Robinson, Drew Turberville and Josh Turberville return for the Golden Wave.

Weekend of soccer set at Tupelo’s SportsPlex
The Tupelo Tournament, a high school soccer event being played this weekend at SportsPlex, continues today with a four-match schedule, starting at 6 p.m.
The two early matches feature the Tupelo girls against Pontotoc and the South Pontotoc girls against DeSoto Central.
At 7:30, South Pontotoc’s boys play Corinth while Tishomingo County’s girls play Vicksburg St. Aloysius.
Saturday’s schedule features 19 matches, starting at 10 a.m. One of the highlights will be the Tupelo boys playing Corinth at 2:30 p.m.

Limited tickets on sale for Bearcats at FedEx
Baldwyn has a limited number of tickets available for its boys and girls games against Myrtle at the FedExForum in Memphis on Nov. 23.
Fans can purchase tickets between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday at the Baldwyn gym. Tickets are good for the Los Angeles Lakers-Memphis Grizzlies game that night.
