High School Roundup: Calhoun City wins Skuna River Rivalry in OT

Lavarious Varnado scored on a 2-yard run and added a 2-point conversion run in overtime Friday to lead Calhoun City to a thrilling 15-14 win over rival Bruce in the Skuna River Rivalry game.
Bruce (8-3, 4-1) tied the Division 1-2A game at 7-7 in regulation on a 77-yard pass from Davis Brown to Shaq Bush in the fourth quarter. Bush also caught a 5-yard TD pass in overtime from Brown.
Calhoun City (7-4, 4-1) led 7-0 after the first quarter on a 38-yard pass from Brieton Sykes to Travone Petty.
IAHS 62, Tishomingo County 14: Ashton Shumpert rushed for two TDs and caught two TD passes to lead the Indians (10-0, 5-0) to a 1-4A victory.
Shumpert scored on runs of 9 and 10 yards. He also caught a 30-yard scoring pass from freshman QB Vijay Miller and a 6-yard pass from starting QB Tyler Dossett.
Dossett opened the Indians’ scoring with a 44-yard TD scamper.
Saltillo 45, Hernando 28: Saltillo QB Andrew Soper had 27 carries for 153 yards and scored four TDs to lead the Tigers (6-4, 3-3) to a key Division 1-5A win. He also completed 10 of 20 passes for 141 yards.
Soper scored on three 1-yard runs and a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter.
A.J. Rye kicked a 19-yard field goal while Jalen Hadley and David Little returned interceptions for TDs for the Tigers.
New Albany 14, Lewisburg 13: Lewisburg missed a 50-yard field goal attempt with 1.3 remaining to let Division 2-4A winner New Albany escape with a one-point win.
New Albany (7-4, 5-0) QB Spencer Day threw a 38-yard pass to Austin Howard to give his team a 14-7 lead in the third quarter.
Lewisburg answered in the fourth quarter on a 29-yard by Chris Traylor. However, the home team failed on a two-point conversion run.
Aberdeen 39, South Pontotoc 3: The Bulldogs (9-2, 5-0) jumped out to a 33-0 halftime lead and never looked back in their Division 2-3A win.
Josh Williams threw a 20-yard TD pass to Trey Mims and a 35-yard scoring strike to Jeremy Brandon for Aberdeen.
Okolona 62, Walnut 14: The Chieftains (4-7, 2-3) clinched a Class 2A playoff berth with a Division 1 win against Walnut.
Everett Brooks scored three TDs on runs of 7, 15 and 40 yards for Okolona.
Houston 38, Kosciusko 10: Chris Thornton scored on a 9-yard run and returned an interception 65 yards for a TD to lead Houston (9-2, 3-2) to a 4-4A win.
Mooreville 50, Nettleton 15: QB Tay Rucker passed for two TDs and rushed for two to help the Troopers clinch a playoffs berth. Mooreville compiled 537 yards in total offense.
Vardaman 60, TCPS 6: QB Cody Jenkins threw four TD passes to lead the Rams (7-3, 7-0) to a 1-1A win.
Ripley 60, Alcorn Central 6: Ripley QB Cody James passed for 134 yards and 3 TDs to lead the Tigers (7-4, 4-1) in 1-3A win.
Smithville 54, Thrasher 18: Smithville rallied from a 12-0 first-quarter deficit for its 1-1A victory. Turner Sanderson scored on runs of 1, 5 and 15 for the Seminoles.
Kossuth 28, Holly Springs 19: Elijah Potts rushed for two 1-yard TDs and threw a 23-yard scoring pass to Blake Holley to lead the Aggies to a 1-3A win.
Marshall Academy 52, Kirk Academy 13: Aaron McAlexander caught an 8-yard TD pass from Dakota Dailey and he also returned a punt 96 yards for a TD in the Patriots’ win.
Starkville 34, Callaway 16: QB Gabe Myles threw two TD passes and scored on a 53-yard run to lead the Jackets to a 2-5A win.
Calhoun Academy 44, Briarfield 0: The Wildcats advanced to the second round of the MAIS 8-man playoffs for the first time in the program’s history.

Thursday
Houlka 22, Benton County 18: Houlka trailed 18-8 in the fourth quarter after a couple fumbles deep in its own territory.
The team rallied behind a touchdown pass from Wyatt Easterley to Larry Jones and a TD run by R.J. Johnson.
Easterley, a sophomore, also ran for a TD for the Wildcats (2-8), who close their season next week at Coldwater.
