Sophomore sprinter Ranesha Townsend and her Houlka teammates will be running for state championships today in Pearl at the MHSAA Class 1A, 3A and 5A track and field meet.
Townsend is the favorite in the 1A 100- and 200-meter dashes while Houlka has the best recorded times in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays.
Myrtle’s Halle Knowles is the favorite in the 1A girls 1,600 meters while teammate Bryan Cook is the boys favorite in the same event.
Myrtle’s girls are the defending state champions in 1A.
Oxford’s boys, a five-time 4A state champion since 2002, bid to win their first 5A crown. Sam Kendricks gives the Chargers a favorite in the pole vault.
In Class 3A, Corinth’s Brian McDonniel heads into the 3,200 meters with the best time – 10 minutes, 39 seconds.
In 1A, Tupelo Christian Prep has two hurdlers qualified – Eliza Barrow and Brian Yim. The Eagles’ George Frandenburg has the state’s best time in the 200 meters with a 22.92 clocking. Girls long jumper Sawyer Ewing rounds out the TCPS lineup.
