Houston DE Jones adds a star, gains MVP honors

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Houston defensive end Chris Jones went into Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic week as a 4-star defensive end. He picked up a fifth star from 247Sports on Friday.
He also took home the Mississippi MVP trophy after he picked up eight tackles, a sack and three tackles for loss in a 21-16 loss on Saturday.
Jones, a Mississippi State commit, has one more game as a prep. The 6-foot-6, 248-pounder will play in the 2013 Under Armour All-America Game in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Jan. 4.
“It’s all about working hard. You get out what you put in,” Jones said.
Jones wasn’t ranked in the service’s Top247 when the season opened and is now the country’s No. 15 prospect.
Itawamba AHS 4-star running back Ashton Shumpert has yet to make a decision from his list of 10 scholarship offers.
There were plenty of SEC eyes here Saturday, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Mississippi State among them. Mississippi’s team had nine MSU commits and one Ole Miss commit.
Shumpert’s teammates tried their best to sway him.
“They were on me at the start of the week, but lately we were just worried about the game,” Shumpert said.
Four of the Journal’s seven area players started for Mississippi. Parker Adamson (Oxford) and Shumpert (IAHS) started on offense. Chris Jones (Houston) and Brandon Mack (Lafayette) started at defensive end and defensive back. Shumpert was one of four team captains.
Three Mississippi quarterbacks started the game 11 for 11 passing. Oxford quarterback Parker Adamson was 7 for 7 in the run. Mississippi’s first incompletion came with 7:58 left in the second quarter.
Alabama kicker Thomas Hamlin’s three field goals, all in the first half, tied a Classic record. Four players now hold that record, including Tupelo’s John Michael Marlin (2000).
Hamlin missed a 52-yarder in the third quarter and also missed an extra point.
