Houston Hilltoppers start at midnight

HOUSTON – For the second year, the Houston Hilltoppers football team hit the field in full pads the first possible second.

Mississippi High School Athletics Association sanctions high school practice to begin June 30 without pads, but athletes can gear up in full uniform – and really hit – beginning Aug. 4.

Coach William Cook’s Hilltoppers were on their field in pads and ready to practice at 12:01 a.m.

“It’s just something different to get some excitement built up,” Cook said. “The kids are really into it. We did it last year and the community liked it. We wanted to wait until we were in full pads. That makes it more interesting.”

Cook said the midnight practice would last a couple of hours and the Toppers will go back to daytime scrimmages.

“We’re doing two-a-days, but not really,” Cook said. “We go out for a couple of hours and then take a break, cool down and get some fluids in them, then go back out for a couple more.”
