ICC Indians end on high note

The Itawamba Community College Indians ended their 2012 football season with a 24-23 victory over the defending national champion East Mississippi Lions on Oct. 27.
For head coach Jon Williams, that is enough to remember.
“I think if you let your mind wonder too much, the process of building can get clouded,” Williams said. “When the clock ran out on our last game, and we beat Scooba, that was the best moment of the season.”
The Indians certainly had their share of moments, including two three-game winning streaks that propelled them to a 6-3 overall record, and 4-2 in North Division play.
Those two streaks were at the very beginning of the season, and the very end.
But sandwiched in the middle was a three-game losing streak, which began with a 14-12 loss to the Holmes Bulldogs on Sept 20. In that contest, ICC was leading 6-0 in the fourth quarter before a questionable ruling of a fumble on an apparent pass went against the Indians, and for a touchdown for Holmes.
“I don’t ask about the call, but what I ask myself about that game is if we had been able to convert in the red zone,” Williams said. “We shouldn’t have been in that position.
excited for 2013
“Yes, we did lose two games by a total of five points, and we could have been an 8-1 football team. But with the sophomores we have coming back, it makes for a lot of excitement for the 2013 campaign.”
Williams was happy to report that at least four Indians will continue their football careers at four-year schools: offensive linemen Connor Popeck and Brennan Tutor from Pontotoc, linebacker Deryck Gildon, and defensive lineman Midoho Okpokowuruk.
ICC had five other players in the recent MACJC All-Star game.
“I look forward to the players coming back,” Williams said. “It will be a continuation of the chemistry we built this season.”
Among the players Williams is looking forward to welcoming back for 2013 include quarterbacks Andrew Goodman, Griff Loftis from Mooreville and Chase Watson from Saltillo, offensive lineman Brandon Jones, receivers Jarvis Bentley and Sanford Seay, and defenders Cameron Wiggins, C. J. Jackson, Malcolm Pickens from Okolona, and Darrius White.
