FULTON – After taking the halftime lead, the Itawamba Indians failed at their upset bid, falling to Gulf Coast 76-67 in quarterfinal action of the junior college state tournament on Monday.
Itawamba earned a 36-22 halftime lead over the No. 17-ranked team in the country, the South Division No. 1 seed.
It was the final game as Itawamba head coach for Marty Cooper, who is stepping down after 14 seasons with the Indians, and 27 years as a coach.
Quarterfinal action continues today with women’s games.
At 1 p.m., Northeast will face Copiah-Lincoln; while North No. 1 seed Itawamba will play East Central at 6 p.m.
Semifinal games are Wednesday, and championship games are Thursday at the Davis Event Center.
