OXFORD – In a series filled with excitement, the Itawamba AHS Indians saved the best for last.
With the Indians down to their final out in the top of the seventh, Trevor Wallace connected for a 2-run home run, tying the game and keeping the Indians’ season alive.
The Indians would go on to capture a 9-8 thriller when Brian Mendoza drove in Bronson Smith with the winning run in the eighth.
“He sent it for a ride,” IAHS coach Brian Long said of Wallace’s home run. “We’ve rode our seniors all year and he’s just super.”
The comeback win completed the Indians’ comeback from a 6-3 deficit and propels Itawamba into the third round of the Class 4A Playoffs against West Lauderdale.
It was the second straight day that Itawamba captured a 1-run win.
“That’s one thing that we’re very proud of,” Long said. “They don’t ever quit. They never quit.”
Said Oxford coach Bradley Roberson: “You have to give them credit for that, they’re a good baseball team.”
