Mississippi State at Auburn
Kickoff: 11:21 a.m. TV: WCBI
The buzz: It’s a huge opportunity for the Bulldogs, who need to prove they can win SEC West games against an opponent other than Ole Miss.
Next week: Thursday, home vs. LSU
LAST-MINUTE NEWS: After averaging just 2.6 yards per rush last weekend against an unheralded Utah State defense, there’s speculation that Auburn could shuffle its offensive line today. “We’ll see,” senior Brandon Mosley said earlier this week, “there’s no telling.” He’s listed as the starter at right tackle, but could shuffle to the other side.
Southern Illinois at Ole Miss
KICKOFF: 5 p.m. TV: Pay per view
THE BUZZ: After a tough loss at home to BYU, the Rebels will want to avoid the upset against an FCS foe – remember last year’s opener with Jacksonville State? They haven’t opened 0-2 since 2004.
NEXT WEEK: Saturday, at Vanderbilt
LAST-MINUTE NEWS: Freshman safety Chief Brown took some snaps at running back this week as Houston Nutt searched for bodies in an already injury-depleted backfield. Brown rushed for 2,173 yards and 28 touchdowns at Winona. Senior Enrique Davis has not been completely ruled out, and Brown won’t have a large role.
Southern Miss at Marshall
KICKOFF: 2:30 p.m. TV: CSS
THE BUZZ: The Golden Eagles need to get more from their offense after struggling in their opening win against Louisiana Tech.
NEXT WEEK: Saturday, home vs. SE Louisiana
LAST-MINUTE NEWS: Prosecutors have dropped all charges in a case against Marshall wide receiver Troy Evans, giving the Thundering Herd a needed lift heading into its Conference USA opener against Southern Miss.
Evans caught 21 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns last season and is the team’s leading punt and kick returner. He will be a game-time decision today.
