From staff reports

A crowded regular season basketball schedule was shuffled this weekend by the winter storm that has shut down most of Northeast Mississippi.

“It’s one of them deals where the weather man just took control. And there may not be any school again Monday,” Robert Kent of Blue Mountain, an assigning official for District I, said Friday.

“There is a world of games already scheduled next week and we are going to have trouble getting them all in.”

Also two district tournaments at Calhoun Academy and Marshall Academy have been put on hold.

One of the problems is that many of the remaining games are division games that have a bearing of the seedings for the division tournaments that are scheduled Feb. 12-17. Regular season play will have to be finished next Saturday. Next week’s schedule is already full for Tuesday and Friday.

“We are going to have to wait and see what happens,” Nettleton principal Larry Williams said.

The Nettleton at Mooreville date was one of 30 games frozen out Friday. It is tentatively rescheduled for Thursday. It is typical of many games, and has a direct bearing on the Division 1-2A standings.

The girls are locked in a three-way race with Hatley and New Site at the top of the division. The boys game determines whether Baldwyn or Mooreville is No. 1 in the division.

The snow has already wiped out one big showcase game. Oxford and Corinth have already called off their tilt.

Although most of the schedule remains unsettled, with weather forecasts indicating up to four days before a thaw, schools have already started redrawing dates.

Tentatively rescheduled for Monday: Hatley at Hamilton; Pine Grove at New Site; Shannon at Kossuth (or Thursday); Thrasher at Jumpertown (or Thursday)

Tentatively rescheduled for Thursday: Olive Branch at Tishomingo County; Bruce at South Pontotoc; Ripley at New Albany; East Union at Ingomar; Pontotoc at North Pontotoc; Blue Mountain at Falkner.

Tentatively scheduled Feb. 10: Potts Camp at Myrtle; Wheeler at Kossuth.

Canceled: Tupelo at Baldwyn; Oxford at Corinth.
